This is to declare, Tho, I wasn’t there On a nice day, sky blue and clear, He from Jal, Her from Eunice, To Hobbs they drove, in maybe a Model A, That being before the Porsche, And after the buggy and horse. On September 25th, 1932, both 19 years old and oh so bold. No one their resolve could sway, There being the nearest preacher. They vowed with each other to stay, To love, cherish and obey. No pictures remain, except in their memory, One day their home burned, you see.
These weren’t the best of times, The depression just wouldn’t go away. Together they would meet the challenge. Jobs scarce and hard to find, It was hard to face the grind.
Good news, things were beginning to change, More than cowboys were riding the range, Trucks, oil rigs, and pipeline construction, Dad joined the latter function. A job with El Paso Natural Gas on July 10, 1934, Didn’t bring riches, but was steady. Before the first paycheck, she was ready It being Friday 13th, A.J was born, No hospital, but the Hobbs Hotel served them well. September 13th, 1936, this time a girl, Wanda Laverne made their hearts swell, Then, a light at the end of the Depression, Another baby on the scene, January 14th, 1939 was Norma Jean. Of course, there is much I don’t know, Or have the space to mention. Oh yes, one more to give our attention, A boy on February 20, 1941, Douglas Earl, And that red hair was a shock How they loved every lock
Nothing could stop the clock, WWII was on the heels of the depression, Oil and gas were needed more and more, One night, Number 1 plant did blow, And A.J.’s feet hit the floor, Mom yelled, “What is wrong with you?” Another explosion and then she knew.
The Company and the kids grew together, In all that hot weather. Besides the odor, change was in the air. Dad was being transferred from there, Extended family had always been close, Now need to move arose.
Got to keep that natural gas on the go, And in 1951 off to Dimmitt, Texas with tears, goodbyes and sighs, There weren’t many dry eyes.
Now begins 23 years at Dimmitt Compressor Station, Home was first house on the right, Events started to happen pretty fast The way things were couldn’t last, Wanda married Paul Dean Dyer at Clovis, NM on January 15, 1954, We in that Pontiac rode, Dad’s cigar kept losing its light. I expect a sign of a daddy’s heart breaking, Gallup, NM was to be their abode. June 11th the same year, A. J. and Claudeen took the plunge, From the church in that Pontiac we rode. They had to drive that decorated Chevy. Grandchildren began to come to make faces beam. Wait, weddings aren’t over yet! Otis King has picked him a plum, Norma Jean married him January 24th, 1958. They settled on the farm he was from. November 6th, 1959 Doug persuaded Linda Murrell, To give marriage a whirl. Empty nest but not time to be idle, Farms, houses, cows, pigs, horses, cars, Earl traded everything but Ora Lee, and cigars. He quit the cigars and chewing tobacco, And she didn’t make him go, More grandchildren, 13 in all God did send, And Grandma loved feeding them all.
Then retirement came in 1976 and to Plainview they did go to their own house, This, Dad cannot trade.
By now the Great Grandchildren have begun, Dad must count with pen and paper, Too many to add in the head. Thirty at last count and that may not be the end, Some even came in two’s. Wow! Two great-great grandchildren, And I think it is safe to say, For none of these would they take bids, And I’m not forgetting those wonderful add-ons, Of which I am one, I just don’t have enough fingers and toes, But, I expect Grandma knows. Lots of work, love, living and God’s Blessings, Of all a book could be written, Since Earl Jones and Ora Lee Rodgers was smitten.
