Updated December 3, 2011

Hi Linda,

Hope everything is going good for you and yours.  I talked to Veda Marshall and she asked me to send Travis’ obituary in for her.  [Please see Good-Byes.] My dues are close, so thought I would take care of both.

Everything is good in Tishomingo.  We finally got some rain and everything is greening up before the fall brown takes over.

Be good and really appreciate what each and everyone of you do for keeping us informed.

Thanks,

Jackie Carter

Tishomingo, OK

Hi Linda & Sue,

Here it is October and I noticed my dues are due in August!!!  I’m so sorry.  I’m really thankful you kept sending it.  Many Thanks. !

Enclosed is my check for another year.  Enjoy reading about everyone.

Thanks,

Nita Choate

Dear Rusty Pipeliner Staff,

Thanks so much to each of you for the dedication you show each month to help us keep in touch with all of the retirees.

Enclosed is our donation to keep us in good standing for awhile.

Thanks for everything,

Hi Guys:

Oops! Late.  Sorry that October came and then November just sneaked in.  We are glad that you don’t have memory problems and we still get our “Rusty Pipeliner” right on time.  We have had the good fortune to see all of our kids since May even though they are scattered all around the country – Wisconsin, New York, California and Arizona.  We are so proud of all of them.  My e-mail address is now vilavjgardom02@aol.com

Dear Sue and Linda:

Enclosed is a check for a couple of years so we will be ahead for a change.  We are so grateful to those of you who put so much effort into publishing the “Pipeliner”.  We enjoy being able to read of the goings and comings of our fellow retirees.

Sincerely,

Vance & Wynona Garrett

Hi Linda,

Here are our dues for another year and every penny we send is well worth it as we enjoy reading all the news.

We moved from Midland this past May to Pflugerville, TX and have finally gotten settled.  We really enjoy being here close to our daughter, Stacy, and all of her family.  Stacy works for St. David Hospital in Austin scheduling surgeries.  Our son, Kenny, and family still live in Hobbs, NM and he is still with El Paso and our other son, Derrell Joe, and family have just recently moved to Farmington, NM and Derrell Joe works for Enterprise Energy.

Dennis had heart bypass surgery this past January and is doing great and we are so thankful for his recovery.

Thank all of you so much for keeping us all informed.  Hope everyone has a wonderful Holiday Season.

Our new address is:

Dear Linda,

Would you please include the enclosed obituary for Gaylord Scott in the next issue of the Rusty Pipeliner.  He worked a short time for El Paso Natural Gas and then was a Texas Highway Patrol officer at the Guadalupe Mountains for about twenty years.  He lived at the gas camp with everyone and was a friend to all of us. [Please see Good-Byes.]

Dear Linda,

I enjoy reading the publication every month but it’s sad to see Rudy Boeta & Lynn Parsons passing.  Rudy and I started in the mail room back in 1964.  Rudy, Lynn and I played fast pitch at the Hueco Club and of course those were wonderful days.

It was nice to see you at Alice Ross’ funeral at Ft. Bliss Cemetery.  Alice was a wonderful member of our Choraliers for over 30 years and we will all miss her very much.  Alice always had that beautiful smile and wonderful Choralier parties at Alice’s Bar and Grill.  Great memories from the past.

EPNG continues to support the El Paso Texas Flags Across America and it’s good to have some of them in El Paso.  They have donated pipe for our donation container and made our plaque stands.

Thank you for all you do for Rusty Pipeliner News and looking forward to seeing everyone at the El Paso Retiree’s Reunion Luncheon on October 13, 2011.

Linda,

When I don’t look at the address label, I don’t know when dues are due.  When I put stuff to remember on the calendar and don’t look at it, I miss stuff that I need to remember, it’s tough all over sometimes!!!!

Life has been good to me in Georgetown, TX for thirty years and I thank God for good ole EPNG and the great association I’ve had with fellow employees.  Where else could I have found the stability and reliability furnished by El Paso and its employees?

Thanks for keeping us informed about our friends.

Dear Linda,

Here is my check for another year on the news.  Sorry I’m late.  My wife, Lucy, had a stroke on November 1, 2010 leaving her crippled on her left side requiring caregiver’s assistance 13 hours per day 7 days a week from 5:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.

Dear Pipeliner News,

My contribution for the “News” is included.  Also, my thanks to all of you who work so hard to keep us in touch with old friends and neighbors.  Thanks again for the good job all of you are doing.

Mary Carman

Dear Linda:

Thanks to you and all of the RPN group from callers, mailers, editors, story tellers, etc.  We all appreciate what you do.

So many write to you of what they are doing or have done.  I want to encourage all the retirees to take advantage of this free time we now have.  We were lucky to work for a company that had generous benefits and a matched IRA.  In my lifetime, I have been lucky enough to travel to all but four states in these United States (missed North Dakota, Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire).  I’ve also been to Canada and Mexico.  I was lucky enough to live in Europe for 2 ½ years and so have traveled to Germany, France, Italy, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and Switzerland.  Since retirement, Marge Spears Digison, Alice Ross and I took a cruise to the Caribbean and a few years later, Marge and I went on another cruise – this time to Turkey, Greece and the Greek Isles.  Later one of my grandsons was working in Stuttgart, Germany so the family and I went to visit him and took a side trip to Rome.  But I saved the best for last.  My daughter and I took two separate safari tours in Africa – the first to South Africa, Botswana, and Zimbabwe and the second to Tanzania.  My travel wants are different now but am looking forward to a trip to Santa Fe next year.

I would enjoy hearing from any and all of you.

Thanks for all your dedication in getting the “Retiree’s News” out. We know fewer and fewer of those still mentioned.

Tom and Norma Grant

Enclosed is the obit for Burnell Hennigan.  Burnell was a Tech in the San Juan Division Communications Dept.  I worked with Burnell from the time he went to work for EPNG until I retired.  Burnell was very quiet and didn’t have much to say, but I have never heard of anyone who didn’t like him and there are very few people like that.  He was a very good technician and very good at anything that needed done and a good friend to all who knew him. I am also enclosing a check to help you guys.  We all appreciate all you do.  God bless you all.

Dear Linda / RPN,

Since my last correspondence with you – I have retired from San Juan College – eight years of teaching “Industrial Safety”.  I now volunteer two days a week at Browning’s Horse Ranch cleaning stalls and pens and have developed into a fair “pooper – Scooper”!  Also taking Tap and Line Dancing classes with Jan.  Every weekend you’ll find me at “SunRay Park” watching the ponies run.  Jan and I will start Tai-Chi classes next week.  We both volunteer at Pinon Hills Community Church where we attend.  As you can tell, we both stay very busy, active & happy !

Hello to all and donation enclosed.

Hello Linda,

I thought I better let you all know we are no longer living in El Paso, after fifty years.  We moved to Tulsa, OK this spring to be nearer to family.  What a change in the weather and everything.  But we are enjoying  Tulsa.  We are living in a small gated community with mostly retired people.  I have moved but they didn’t take the TEXASAN out of me.  I still wear my UT and UTEP Shirts and Caps.  I been reading the RPN on line for the last several years, and really enjoy the news.  I appreciate all the work that goes into to get it out.  We have a new email address which I would like to have included.

Thanks for the fine job you all are doing.

Dear Sue,

My name is Mike Copeland.  I was looking to get an obit in the Rusty Pipeliner for my father, Adrian.  While looking for your email address today I noticed one was already sent in.  I'm not sure who sent it.  Maybe his brother Jim.

I was adding some things to it concerning dad and EPNG.  I also wanted folks to know that dad followed Jim out to Farmington as Jim was already working for EPNG. [Please see Good-Byes.]

Is there any way you can replace the current obit with this one attached?  If not, it isn't any big deal, but it would be great if you could.

Thank you so much,

Mike Copeland

Linda,

Linda,

I need to correct Norman’s age that was in last month’s newsletter.  Don’t know if it was a lapse in my memory or a typo.  At any rate, he is very proud of his 82 years since in 1978, he had a life expectancy of 8 years.  He has continued to baffle his heart doctor’s and has long outlasted three.  So, please correct that in your next newsletter. Over the weekend, we were able to meet our newest great granddaughter from Kenya.  She is just precious and so very smart.  Her name is Julia and will be three in August.  Thanks for everything.

Dear Sue,

Thank you for the support the Rusty Pipeliner has given us for our annual EPNG Retiree’s Roundup here in Farmington.  We certainly appreciate it.  I have enclosed my donation, and the 2011 flyer for our next Roundup.  Please, if possible, place this flyer in your July issue.

Thanks for the Rusty Pipeliner “all” these years.  I would like to cancel now.  I rarely know anyone except a “good-bye”!  Can’t believe Len has been gone 2 ½ years already.

Hello “Rusty Pipeliners”

So sorry our dues are late – is this a side effect of aging?

We are doing better than in recent weeks.  Bill had a cortisone injection in one knee and an epidural about 2 weeks ago.  He’s feeling better now.  I had a kitchen accident March 15, lost between 2 ½ - 3 ½ pints of blood, emergency room and 2 follow up stays in the hospital.  Still going to wound care center but much improved.

We’re having a hot, dry summer.  Farmers are suffering but it’ll rain again one of these days.

Thanks again for your patience with old, forgetful folks like us.

Bill & Carolyn Bowers

Linda,

You are unbelievable for all the hard work you delve into for the retiree’s.  Don’t know how you do it, but you are very much appreciated.  Thanks again!

Don Cannon

Thanks for the Rusty one.  See a lot of names and faces I worked with in Jal.  I was there for 33 years in the paint shop.  Thanks again.

Hi Sue and Linda,

It's that time again and we again wish to express our appreciation for all the hard work you so selflessly do.  Dan especially enjoyed the special on Bud Lassiter and the YMCA.  It was his privilege to be mentored by this group of dedicated men, Vernus Carey, and Al O'Leary both at the Y and Skyline Ranch and became the next group of "Y Leaders".  Enclosed is a picture of this group.

Dear Linda,

Enclosed is an obit for Tom Bell.  It didn’t mention it but he worked many years for El Paso.  He was a lot of fun to be around and had many friends.  We knew him at Williams station.  Thank you for entering this in the “Good Byes”.[Please see p.10]

Linda,

Thanks to all the staff.  Enclosed is check for another year.  We take each year as it comes.  We celebrated 62 years of marriage last January.  Norman will be 81 this month of June, so you see why we take things one day at a time.  Just returned from Stephenville and the Retiree’s reunion.  Was very nice but smaller each year; but lots of visiting, good food and fellowship.  This June has been especially good to us.  Our grandson and his wife have a 6 month old baby boy they got when he was 2 days old and the adoption was final June 7th.  Our granddaughter who is a missionary in Kenya and has legal guardianship of little Julia (2 years old) received Julia’s passport on June 7th, so she will soon be able to bring her to Midland, TX for a visit with her “nana”, Karen Ivy.  We are truly blessed.  Also, Karen is still recovering from a severe brain concussion she received last September 2010, but is making great progress.  We had all 3 children and their spouses, grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren here Memorial Day weekend.  All but one grandson and daughter-in-law were here in Jal.  Weather was about 105° each day but did not hamper our good time.

Norman & Margaret Hicks

RPN Staff,

Thanks for the dedicated work you do to keep us connected.  J. F. is still working on his ten acre dream place with a pond and in-ground swimming pool.  It will be ready to sell this summer.

Our family is doing well except our daughter, Lecrecia, had her 3rd brain surgery in Houston on December 20, 2010 and was there for her 3rd chemo treatment April 19, 2011.  She will go to Tulsa for three more chemo treatments.  She fell and broke her back in two places last year but the cement they put in seems to be working well.  Thanks for all the prayers.  We pray for good health for all this coming year.  Donation enclosed.

Dear Rusty Pipeliners’ News,

Enclosed is our contribution for keeping the News coming our way. We enjoy reading it a lot and sometimes see names that we remember from camp days. Such was the case when we saw John Elms name. His family lived two houses down from us when we lived at Williams Station between Flagstaff and Williams, Arizona in the 70s. He used to have Airedale dogs that he hunted mountain lions with. He generously gave a puppy (one of several) to my youngest son, Dean, but it was just too big a dog for us to keep so home he went. We loved the camp life there. Elk, deer, antelope and turkeys were all around us in the beautiful ponderosa pine forest. Summers were really nice if you had a jacket for when the sun went down. Yvonne was attending Northern Arizona University for her BA and then her Masters. We moved to Roswell, NM after she graduated. Our boys played Little League and learned to hunt while we lived there. Yvonne worked at the Ponderosa Inn with Vi Nutt (Harold’s wife) who lived next door to us and Lucille Gardom (Paul’s wife) who lived around the corner. Bruce Gardom and Tracy Ikard both worked there as busboys and then in the kitchen. Not many 15 yr. olds can cook lobster and steak like they did!

Yvonne especially remembers one winter when we got 250 inches of snow and it was often 30 degrees below zero. I had to put a heat lamp under our VW’s motor so it would start in the mornings. There was lots of shoveling that winter. Tickets were purchased to see the great pianist Van Cliburn perform at NUA symphony hall and detailed plans were made to attend. What should happen on the day of the concert--- Snow, snow and more snow and Interstate 40 was closed. Wouldn’t you know it would start on that exact day. He never came there again as far as I know. Students at the University could jump out the second story windows as the main doors were snowed shut.

In the spring when the snow all melted, it was a sea of red clay mud. That stuff stained the bottom of everyone’s levis a reddish color that would not wash out. If you were not careful the mud built up on any kind of tire till they would not turn anymore. It was really hard to get around then. But of course, we hands could always walk to work.

Russel Cox and his family lived on the other side of us. They had one son and three daughters. Harold Nutt had only sons but there were always lots of kids to make a team for anything they wanted to play. As I recall, Dorothy Cox was the best player on their teams.

The only bad memory we have of camp was the mosquitoes. In the summer they could be ferocious. I remember that when we moved there in August, Kenny Nutt came to visit immediately and he was covered from head to toe it seemed to me) with big red itchy welts. We soon learned why and our boys looked like that too. I forgot – we always had an abundance of skunks. That was a minor problem too.

Red Carr was the station chief and he was always very helpful and well liked. I remember a guy who came all the way from I-40 (3 miles) to our station, past all those trees, to ask if he could use the restroom. We all thought that was really funny. He must have been a tourist from the city.

Well just a few memories. Maybe some of the others who were there at the times can add a few to the News.

Dear Old Gas Folk

We are getting older but ain’t we tough and blessed.  I am reminded of how blessed because as I write this, the reports of the tornado’s work in Joplin is all over the news.  I also feel guilty that I am concerned about our having to ration water in the Midland area.

I need to apologize for not sending in a notice of Linda Jones’ passing.  Her husband was Doug Jones.  They lived and worked in El Paso and had moved to Granbury when Doug retired.  She is survived by two daughters, Devonne and Amanda, four granddaughters and spouses, her mother, and two great grandchildren.

Linda was one of those rare people who didn’t talk bad about others.  If she thought it, she kept her opinion to herself.  Also, she suffered from crippling arthritis many years.  But when you ask how she was doing, the answer was always “Fine”.  And, she is doing fine now – she is with Jesus, pain free and her joints are all straight.  So now I try to take a page out of Linda’s book “keep going and respond with an “I’m fine”.

I have had a busy year and have been so blessed.  I got to take a trip to Israel the last of February – yes, at my age.  Others went that were older.  I admit it took nearly two weeks to recover, but it was so worth it.  I’m fine because I don’t have time not to be.

Our family is now two stronger.  Megan McGowen married in May and T. J., Mike and Esther’s son became a daddy in May.  Two more graduated this May – Kelby McGowen and Rose Jones.

A side note here:  As I watch TV, I see advertisements to donate to the Red Cross for the disasters.  There are others out there and most of them use all the money for the victims.  Google to Disaster Relief Agencies – then click on Disaster Relief Agencies and non-governmental organizations.  There is a long list there.  Click on them and find out about them.  I expect their funds may be getting thin with all the demands this year.

I am partial to the Southern Baptist ones, of course.  These people respond quickly and work long hours, staying as long as they are needed.

Just a note to say “HELLO” and that I am doing well, and to say “HELLO” to everyone.  Wanda was diagnosed with cancer 06-01-10 and after several tests, chemo, and radiation, she said, “I will not go through this again.  I want to live out my last days on this earth as peaceful as possible.”  She passed away @ 5:03 p.m. 04-25-11.  [Please see Good-Byes.]

Dear Linda,

Please include in the next issue the following obituary of Stanley Nemec – a dear friend and co-worker since 1950. [Please see Good-Byes.]

Linda Carter,

Enclosed is my check for the Rusty Pipeliner for a couple of years! (Guess that is optimistic for my age!)

Connie, my wife, has had a couple of back surgeries in the last three years, but we keep going!  My back gets to me now and then but the doctor says no surgery is necessary.  Guess that goes with old age.

We moved to San Antonio about six years ago in August.  I know of about four EPNG Co. people living here.  Some in Kerrville also.  Maybe we should start having meetings here.

Last year we spent eleven days in Germany from Berlin to Munich – beautiful country, very clean, no litter or graffiti and everyone spoke English!  We also cruised northeastern Canada for seven days and seven days in the eastern Caribbean with the Heart of Texas Music Association with country western bands and singers.  Lots of fun!

In March this year, we attended my 55th reunion of my class at Texas A & M.  In June, we are going on a two week cruise in the Baltic Sea area visiting 8 different countries ending in Stockholm, Sweden.  As my grandfather came from Stockholm, we are staying for another week to check out my “roots”.  Found a distant relative who says he will show us Sweden!  His son has the same name as me.  Should be interesting!  Thanks for the newsletter.

Dear Ms. Carter,

With this letter, I am submitting the 2011 annual donation with a modest estate gift.  The Clements Family lost O. R. “Randy” Clements in October 2006 and his wife, Lovenia H. Clements left to join him on April 2, 2011.  A copy of her obituary is attached. [Please see p. XX]

Randy and Lovenia always very much looked forward to receiving and reading the latest issue.  Now, in the sunset of our family’s loss, my wife and I will continue to enjoy the newsletter as well.  Please update the mailing address in accordance with the above referenced heading.

Congratulations and thank you for your efforts in publishing the Rusty Pipeliners’ News.

Hi Everyone,

Here I am a day late, but not a dollar short.  I have been putting this off as I hate to write letters.  I also like to read letters that others send in.  I am disappointed when people I know send in their money and just say (“You are doing a good job”).  I like to read how they are doing and what they have been doing.

Here it is spring time and I am way behind on all the work that needs to be done on my small farm.  I sold out of hay a few weeks ago, just a few bails to feed my sheep until their pasture is up enough to feed them.  Out of 10 ewes we got 16 lambs this year.

Norma and I are doing o.k. God bless,

Cleve & Norma Noble

Hello Linda,

I about forgot.  Have a good year.  I know we will.

Ben & Marvel Noland

Sue,

Enclosed is a check to help with expenses for the Rusty Pipeliner.  Thank you so much for putting Jacque’s mom, Doris Riddle’s obituary in.

We both grew up in EPNG Camps, and I went to work for them in 1969, retired in 2002, and then contracted back with the inspection group under Lloyd Moore.  EPNG has always been a part of our lives, and we have made many wonderful friends through the years.  If anyone comes through Jal, please give us a call and come by for a visit.

Thank you for all of your hard work,

Mike and Jacque Orr

Dear Linda and all you faithful and dedicated helpers,

We appreciate all of your work for keeping the RPNews coming our way.

We are back in NM after spending six months in AZ.  We visited the group in Tucson several Wednesdays and we are sorry to say the numbers are diminishing much too quickly.  However, all of us are beginning to show our age.  We had much colder weather there than usual but we’re glad to still be able to travel and we do enjoy our new motor home.

Thanks again for keeping all of us in the extended friends and family group (in the loop).  May is almost here and our temperature (low) last night was 26° on our hill.  But, we like our hill and its view of the beautiful Colorado mountains.  Come visit if you, any of you, ever venture our way.

Thanks again to all,

Alvin Antley

Dear Sue,

I am enclosing a check to help pay expenses for The Rusty Pipeliner for another year.  Although I enjoy it very much, I am sad to realize that I recognize fewer and fewer of the names.  That is to be expected since Doyle and I left Jal in 1967 and El Paso in 1977.  As long as Doyle was living, I could keep up with people better as he knew most of the employees and I knew them by name, even if I did not know them personally.  He did so love his work with the company and the employees were special to him.

Many times when one moves to another town and another job, people and events become faint memories.  That was never so with Doyle and myself.  The people of EPNG and the friends we made during those years always remained in our hearts and do so today in mine.

May all of you have the same memories that we did as we continue through the years.

With fond memories,

Pat Balko

Linda,

As I pay my annual donation, I was thinking that eleven years ago I asked you to be Chairman of the reunion luncheon and you said ok, I’ll do it.  Since that request, you are still reunion luncheon chairman, also Treasurer, keep the monthly breakfast ongoing, call retirees and keep all the data on the retirees, the care committee, and now acting secretary.  Boy, eleven years goes by fast when you are so busy!  “Thank you for all that you do”.

Jerry Bear

[Note from Linda:  Thank you for the kind words, Jerry.  And, thank you for being my right hand man when it comes to filling in for me at the breakfast meetings every now and then.  I also thank Bubbles Eades for her help in checking our attendees in at the breakfast meetings.  It would be chaos without you and Bubbles.]

Thanks for all your work!

Don & Betty Bierd

Thank all of you for the good work you do to keep the retirees in touch with one another.  We really are a special group.

We are surely ready for spring and our gardening.  Nothing like fresh vegetables and sharing them.  Roger is a good gardener and we pray for rain to help us.  Hope all of you will have a bushel and a peck of good summer veggies from your gardens or a friendly neighbor.

Roger & Iwanda Boyd

Hi Sue,

Thanks for the posting about our Midland house.  It’s suppose to close about May 10, 2011.  No point of keeping it when our TX time will be spent caring for Dad in EP.

Have a good summer, come up the Left Coast and see us!  I can guarantee it won’t be your typical hot summer up here.

Debi & Henry Kelly

Thanks again for the RPN.  I enjoy it a lot.  Enclosed is a check for another year.

Love getting the pipeliner!  Sorry about Rochelle Clack’s health but good to hear about her.  Also noticed Doug Cowan had written.  Also thanks to all the English Ladies (who had worked for EPNG) and their annual “English High Tea”: Daphne Wilson, Leslie Gosling and Betty Alexander that was April 3rd.  Also saw several other EPNG retirees that were there:  Bubbles Eades, Marge Boswell, Patsy Brown and Boots O’Toole Healy.

Oh, the note started out to just send in my dues!

Enclosed is our annual donation check for the newsletter.  It seems that the years flash by more frequently all the time.

We went to Baton Rouge again this year during Mardi Gras, to visit with our Granddaughter, her husband and son.  It was raining when we got there, all the next day, and when we left three days later.  The only time I have to check the windshield wipers on our vehicles is when we use one to go to Louisiana.

We made a trip to Pennsylvania for a Shreffler family reunion in June last year, via Virginia to visit with Ruthie’s sister who lives with her son and daughter-in-law in Hampton, VA.  Our daughter, Christy, went with us.  We took the airlines both ways as Christy cannot be away from her medical treatment for a prolonged time.

We still have our “cabin” at Timberon and visit there as often as we can.  It seems that every trip there is a “work” trip rather than a leisure trip as there is always something that needs tending.

Thanks again for all the work that you all do on the newsletter; we appreciate it very much.

Sincerely,

Jack & Ruthie Shreffler

RPN,

Enclosed is our subscription money.  I don’t enjoy the computer like Pat does, so I would prefer getting the RPN by “snail mail”.  We are well and very active.  Our kids, Licia, Rusty & Brian all live in the Phoenix valley.  So, we see them often.  We have 4 grandchildren and all are in college – 3 soon to graduate.  One granddaughter in May from East Texas Baptist U. with a BSN in Nursing, another in August from Mid Western U. with her masters degree as a Physician’s Assistant.  Our only grandson is playing baseball at Baylor U. and will graduate in December with a degree in Graphic Design.  Our youngest granddaughter will attend Grand Canyon U. in the fall as a junior.

We both sing in 2 choirs, active in church, travel some with the choir and try to keep up with our family.  We’ve found that retirement is not for the weak is it??  Enjoy the “Roundup” in Farmington every year also.  Thank you for all the “news”.

RP Staff.

I hope you can use this article or parts of it in some way in the RP.  Daddy and Uncle Howard Boyd went to DC on April 12.  Daddy  was in the Instrument Department with EPNG and so was Uncle Howard.  Uncle Howard lived in Jal for many years and then worked at Snyder.  There is an error in the paper though.  Uncle Howard flew 29 missions instead of 19.  They both enjoyed the trip so much.  They both had been to DC before but had not seen the World War II Memorial.  They said it was so very impressive.

These flights are being done in nearly every state and they are free.  You fill out an application and you are chosen on a first come, first serve basis.  Currently it is for World War II veterans only but the plans are to expand it to include Vietnam vets in a few years.  You can go to honor flight network or honor flight.org to find out the details about the flights and to get an application form.

Thank you and we appreciate everything to do toward keeping everyone in touch.

Hi guys…..

This is from Debi.  Our house in Midland is for sale.  If you know of anyone looking for a house in the Fannin school area, that would be us.  4 bedrooms, 2 baths.

Victoria Printz and her crew are handling the listing, but you can contact us as well.

When we aren’t here in Anaco, we are in EP taking care of my Dad.  I’ve already been there 5 weeks this year and headed back for 2 more weeks later in the month.

Retirement is FUN!!!!  Not.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for another great year.  Only a group of EPNG retirees could exhibit such dedication year after year.  A much appreciated effort!

Bill Fenley

Hi RPN folks,

It’s donation time again, which I am happy to do.  It’s so nice that everyone involved in the production of the RPN uses their time to do such a fine job and a nice one it is.  Thank you to everybody.

When I’ve sent in my annual donation, I’ve said “Hello” to four or five people the last four years and I’ve only had one respond.  So, this year, I’m going to do something else:

“Ford Company claims to have the most sales of pickups for 34 years running.  I’ll tell you why; people who buy Fords don’t have enough money to buy a good truck and are too lazy to walk.  So, they buy Fords!”

“And, one of them has a step and hand rod to help you get into the bed.  The rod is heated – why, you ask?  So the driver can keep his hands warm while waiting for a tow truck!”

Thanks again and Love to all,

Louie E. Fink

Dear Linda,

Enclosed is my dues, plus a little extra for another year of the Rusty Pipeliner.

Dear Rusty Pipeliner News:

Enclosed is our dues for 2011.  As always, we enjoy the news and look forward to receiving it.  Thanks to all who make it possible.

Roy (Moose) is having health problems.  He became ill in April 2010 and during the year was in and out of Rehabs and hospitals several times.  Also had home care.

Since November he has been a patient at the Garrison Rehab and Long Term Care Center in Lubbock, TX.  It is a very nice facility and we are very pleased with the good care he is receiving.  We thank God for the Garrison Center.

Sincerely,

Updated February 24, 2011

Dear Linda,

My dad, Stanton McMahan who will be 91 in April, worked in the Instrument Department in Jal for many years and is now retired and still living in Jal.  He mentioned reading David Lee Hamilton's obituary and that it was submitted by Richard Hamilton's wife.  Richard worked in the Instrument Department  in the mid 50's and then he quit and left Jal and daddy lost contact with him.  Daddy said they called him 'Bones'.  He would love to get in touch with him.  Can you give me their address or phone number so daddy can contact him?

There is going to be another All School Reunion this Labor Day weekend but because of limited facilities and accommodations in Jal it is going to be in Odessa at the MCM FunDome.  The dates are September 2 & 3.  There will be more information and a registration form sent later but for now "save the date."    This is not just for former students but everyone is welcome.  We love EPNG Rusty Retirees and know that there are several in the area so please make plans to attend.

If anyone has any questions about the reunion please contact me at rswain@windstream.com or call 575-395-3383 or contact Betty Wink Kemper at bettyk@hughes.net or call 432-758-5770.  Betty is coordinating the reunion this year.  She has organized reunions for her class several times and did an outstanding job so it goes without saying that this reunion will be very successful.

I have been reading the Pipeliner on line now and that is working great for me.  I am amazed at the enthusiasm that you and the rest of the Rusty Pipeliner staff continue to exhibit in the production of this publication.   In 1999 before the 2000 All School Reunion in Jal, a former JHS student, daughter of former EPNG employee Bob Wright, and my good friend Mary Grayce Wright Morrison coined the phrase "Jal Glue".   She said she thought that anyone who had ever lived in Jal seemed to have some kind of lasting bond and for lack of a better description called it "Jal Glue".  I really think that could be extended to EPNG employees.  It seems they all have some kind of invisible bond/glue that keeps them connected in some manner regardless of health, wealth, or location.  Thank you for being a large part of that glue.  We appreciate you very much.

Way back in May, 1952 when I started working for the Loving Pipeline District, I was working with G.B. Henderson, James Siddall, and Harry Williamson. I learned very quickly how things were done when you were digging out a leak in the pipeline. There was only room in the hole for one man at a time, so you had better relieve him as soon as possible. If you didn’t obey this unwritten law, you paid for it dearly. When you finally got into the hole, it was a long time before you got out. Someone was always in the hole and you found out early to demand that he get out of there and give you a chance. This was a very fair and just way to repair leaks, Although G.B. was a subforeman, he always took his turn and showed you the right way to belong to a work gang. Believe me, ten minutes in a leak hole was a long time when you were using a pick and shoveling. Luckily I was a quick learner and was soon outworking all of them put together – I Think. It was hard work, but very satisfying when the day was done and you knew you had earned your pay that day. We repaired a lot of leaks the few years that I was a pipeliner. I belonged and that was important to me. Thanks, G.B.

Hi Sue,
After writing a monthly memory for 3 years as the beloved prez, I thought that I was memoried out. Then I remembered being at Station #1. It was 1955 or 56 when word was received that a semi carrying a load of eggs had gone into a ravine at Guadalupe Pass. This was about 20 miles from the station, so we grabbed a company pickup and went egg prospecting. The truck was laying on its side with the door open. It was in ravine about 30 feet down. We climbed in and started loading up. The eggs were in crates, so we hauled out as many as we could. which filled the pickup. It might have been a friction accident. You know, a $20,000 insurance policy rubbing up against a $10,000 cargo. We weren't stealing because the eggs were going to rot anyway. Also, no one was there to say that we couldn't help ourselves. We took the eggs back to camp and distributed them to all who wanted them. Well the eggs had been there a day or so and were not going to stay edible for long. Everyone in camp did a lot of breakfasts every day for a while and then they were getting quite strong. (The eggs, that is) I think that most of them were eaten in good faith. They helped some with the grocery bill though. Not too long after that, another truck crashed close to there carrying a load of coconuts. There just wasn't the interest that there was in the egg business, so we didn't make a special trip for them, but, picked some up if we were in the neighborhood. I don't know if anybody else remembers this.

Hello Linda,

And, hello to the chief photographer -- long time no see. It’s time to pay up again. Dating the mailout is a great idea. My fishing guide says time spent fishing does not count on your life span, so, I guess if I am going to make 100, I had better go fishing.

Best wishes and a Happy New Year from the slow lane of Lake Brownwood.

Well another year has come and gone and now time to pay our dues. This has been a rough year in the Hill household. Jack had a hip replacement in April and then shoulder worked on in October. Still not up to par… But, our problems seem minor compared to some of our other El Paso family. Some have lost loved ones and other more serious illness. Our sympathy goes out to those who have suffered these losses… May God bless and comfort each of you. Our prayers go out to everyone for the New Year…Hopefully will be a better one.

May God bless us all in the year ahead.

Hello and God bless all the Rusty Pipeliner Crew!

I simply cannot wait to receive it and read the great stories the President’s message has to tell us!!  Keep them coming, Charlie Doolittle!!  Great!!!

Here are our dues for January 2011!  Didn’t want to be late!

Dear Linda,

I would like to say a very sincere “Thank You” for your response and all your help.  It certainly means so much to me.

I apologize for probably not making sense in my letter.  I am not handling this very well.  Daddy’s name is Earl Stanton but he always went by and preferred being called ‘Buddy’.  My mother’s name is Molena Stanton.

Daddy was very proud of his years with EPNG and told us and his friend’s stories almost everyday.  Don’t know how to reach everyone he knew and worked with but this is an excellent way.

Thank You Card reads:

This extra-special thank-you note sent to you today

Holds more appreciation than any words can say,

For you’re among the nicest people we have ever known,

And you’ll never be forgotten for the thoughtfulness you’ve shown.

I would love to receive the newsletter as I know many employees.  Thank you for your thoughtfulness and kind words, Linda.  May God bless you.

Sincerely,

Sandra Stanton

Dear Linda,

As I explained to you today, I would like more information shared about Barbie and what she meant to so many people. Thank you for your kindness.

"Barbie Lee"

Let me tell you about Barbie Lee as she was affectionately called by all who knew her.

She was my loving wife for just twelve days shy of 58 years. She was dedicated to God, her children and all little children with whom she came into contact. She taught third grade for 18 years. They were favorites of hers. Barbie earned her Masters degree in Education and she also earned her P.H.T. by putting her husband through his last two years of college.

Barbie was the most giving, unselfish person you could know. She gave of her time to family, to her church and to others. She once told me that all she wanted on her headstone were the words "She Loved"

One thing that Barbie and I agreed on in our early married life was that we would never live in southeastern New Mexico, because of the foul smell of sour gas in the atmosphere. We lived in Jal for Twenty Five years. The smell got removed and finally we had to move, and that was a sad day for both of us. She loved the people of Jal.

Barbie was not only the mother of Allen Lee Mobbs and Belinda Gayle Wiens, but she was "maw maw" to Jessica, Castro, Shawna and Megan Mobbs. She was affectionately known as "gram" to Branson and Landon Wiens. She was also great-grandmother to Cassidy and Clinton Castro.

Barbie's art was done with hammer, saw and paint brush as she labored away on her cabin in Cloudcroft. She loved those people and those mountains. Her body now lies among those pine trees and her soul is at peace with her heavenly father.

To Whom It May Concern:

Thank you and May God Bless.

Dear Ms. Gibson,

I have enclosed a notice that I am requesting to be placed in the “Rusty Pipeliner”.

My Dad, Earl “Buddy” Stanton was employed with EPNG for approximately 28 years. He was very proud, in fact, it was his life of working with the company. [Please see Good-Byes].

Dear Other Rusty People,

Yes, we know we are late, but we have been hoping since July that we could give you our new address back in El Paso.  Looks like it will finally take place next week (October 19).  The buyers of our house in Ruidoso had a difficult time getting their mortgage (real estate money is so tight now).  But, finally we are moving back close to our son in EP because memory problems are getting worse and we need a little TLC.  Y’all come see us.

I always look forward to getting the Pipeliner each time.  I need to correct some errors in the article by Cookie Felts in a previous issue.  I had not heard from her in several years and I think she misunderstood some of what I told her.

My older daughter graduated from Odessa High while we were living at Goldsmith.  She married shortly after that and never lived in Jal.  The other two did graduate here.

My son is not a “Jr.”.  His name is Joe Bert.  His father was Bert Henry.  The “Joe” that he went by was a nickname he had since a small child (it’s a long story).  Joe never worked nor did we ever live at Number 4 Plant.  He went to work in 1948 at the main warehouse, then worked as the clerk at Wasson and Goldsmith.  Cookie’s uncle and Joe’s cousin, Sam Chisolm, did work there in the 1950’s.  Joe came to the division warehouse in 1968.  At that time we moved into General Camp.  For those not familiar with it, it was located in the town of Jal, just east of Highway 18 about three blocks from the high school.  The employees who lived here were not plant personnel, but were from all different departments – lab, measurement, accounting, electrical, garage, paint shop, engineering, etc.

When El Paso sold the houses, they sold the lots along with the houses.  That is why we didn’t have to move them.  The parks, streets, vacant lots and the main office were turned over to the city of Jal.  The police department has their headquarters in the main office building.  Only three of the houses were ever moved out.  There are about 10 retirees still living here.

They still look like company houses although there are no more green roofs.  A couple of hail storms took care of them.  Some have been enlarged; a couple have been bricked and some painted a different color.  A few have shutters and carports added.  Some of the smaller ones were turned into rent houses and a few of those are shabby looking.  Some of the yards look like any other place – some well kept – others junky and not mowed.

Living in and raising kids in a camp has been a great experience.  We moved in the first house a few months before our first child was born and they never knew anything different until they left home.  It was quite a shock when they found out you had to pay utility bills!

Many thanks for keeping the paper going so we can all keep in touch.

Ailene Chisolm

Jal, NM

Thanks for all the good work.  You are doing a great job

Dear Linda,

We’re running out of time to renew our dues!  We were able to attend the Farmington Reunion, seeing several friends there including brother, Adrian and wife, Yvonne.  We regret that we will miss the El Paso Reunion – maybe next year.

We traveled on to Flagstaff and attended a shower for our granddaughter who is expecting our first great-grandchild.  Steve Carlson, is still employed by EPNG, is the grandfather to be.

We had an especially hot summer in Arkansas and we are in need of rain.  The Fayetteville shale drilling has given our area quite a boom.

Thank you for all you do.

Hi Guys,

Thank you so much for all the time you spend getting the Rusty Pipeliner to us every month.  It is such a joy to see notes from old friends and acquaintances from our past.  It is sad to read the good-byes, but without them we would not know.  We are both doing good here in Las Cruces and are happy that fall is here to replace that hot summer.

Dear RPN Staff:

I am renewing my dad’s subscription even though he has passed.  I myself would like to keep up with anyone familiar to me.  I grew up at the Willcox Station up until the time I married in August of 1970.  EPNG was such a big, wonderful part of my life.  The children in this day and time absolutely do not know what a wonderful way of life we had growing up at a station.  Gosh, we had 3 streets of families and they were all our family.  We had a tennis court, which we could turn into a volleyball court real fast if we wanted.  There were basketball hoops, 2 great playgrounds, a fishing pond, vacant grass lots at the end of every row of homes, and one big place to play hide and seek.  We had a rec hall with a stage.  We would have Christmas plays and have company dinners.  The high school boys, Danny Riggs, Danny McWilliams and Charlie Burleson along with a couple of boys from town had a band called the Wooden Nickels and they would practice and we would all show up and dance if we wanted.  In fact, this Rex Allen Day Weekend, the band will reunite and JAM at Kathy (Grenko) and Jim Cook’s home – just a hop and a skip and a jump from my home.  It will be a wonderful get together.  Kathy’s family will all be in.  Her Dad, Tony, her brother, John, sisters, Cheryl and Allyson and their families.  My sister, Eilean, will be here from Glendale, Kim Burleson, Linda and Nancy McWilliams live here also and it will be such a wonderful reunion for us all.

Please send my subscription to:

Dear Sue and Linda,

We are moving again--I think this is the last time.  We are moving to Sun City in Georgetown, Texas.

           Glenn and Eleanor Cook

           111 Mustang Island Trail

           Georgetown, TX. 78633

We still enjoy getting the Rusty Pipeliner both written and on the web and even on Face Book!

Glenn turned 75 this year and we celebrated our 52 Anniversary.  It really makes him happy to talk to old friends with EPNG and recall all of the "Old Days". Thanks for all you do for us.

Glenn and Eleanor

Probably none of you out there are "Geocachers" but I finally got around to placing a cache in tribute to the Camp Brats out there.
To see the writeup go to Geocaching.com and type in the zip code 88252. There aren't that many caches around Jal and it should come up on the first page.
No you don't have to join up to see it, you just won't know exactly where it is.
Or just type in GC2HONE in the box and hit return and it will bring up the cache.
Carlotte, the razor blades didn't go under the house, they went into the wall between the studs. For those that moved the house without tearing out the sheet rock, those razor blades are STILL THERE.

J.R. Galle
p.s. geocaching is the largest continuing "game" in the world. It is like a large scavenger hunt where things are hidden and people go find them. There are geocaches hidden in nearly every country in the world. Literally millions of caches have been hidden and there is probably one near you.

Based on the an EPT article (10/13/10), I must assume that Victor Martinez, EPNG Retired, is related to the gubernatorial candidate for the State of New Mexico,

Susana Martinez.

Vic Martinez, you may recall, was instrumental in the production of a privately  published book re: his (great?) grandfather(?), Gen. Toribio Ortega. I had a copy of

said book but I cannot locate it at this time.

I also do not have any contact numbers for Vic and there are a host of them

listed in the El Paso Telephone Directory. Surely, someone at the Rusty Pipeliner

can track Vic down. Sounds like an interesting story to me.

 Ciao!   Paul Daniggelis

Thanks a million, Sue and all who help you!  We hope you all are having cooler weather than we are here in central Texas.  Oh, but, the Lord is good, so good, he has blessed us with some rain now and then for which we are so thankful.  Bless you for keeping us informed in the newsletter.  (Enclosed is our renewal for another year.)

Hi:

Above is the obituary of Jean Fenner, wife of Marcus Fenner.  Marcus retired several years ago after many years of service.  He was in the San Juan Division at Farmington, NM at the time of his retirement.  They moved to Abilene, Texas at that time.  Would you please print her obituary in the Rusty Pipeliner. Hello!

My father, George A. Chittum worked for EPNG Co. for 30 + years in Jal, NM in the Paint Dept.  He remarried and changed addresses.  I would really like for him to start receiving “Rusty Pipeliner’s News” once again.  His address is:

106 N. Magnolia St.

Truth or Consequences, NM 87901-2920.

My father-in-law, Jimmy Doom, EPNG Co. 30 + years, also receives the RPN currently.  We do so much appreciate you and all that you do!!  I had the distinct privilege to grow up in a town that EPNG Co. built!  Most all the men and women that worked for this company are all alike in that they had huge hearts and would do anything for anyone!!  This town has changed – but, the people of EPNG Co. have not.

Sincerely,

Fonia Doom

Linda,

Thanks for the print out of the RPN news.  Keep up the good work.  Oklahoma is good at this time of year.  Golfing is good; fishing is better.  Having a good time with both sports.

Dear RPN Staff:

I will be kind to you and type this as I am overdue on donation.  How come I think of it a month or two in advance, then forget until the month after the due date?

I have had a good year.  I have gotten to travel a lot.  Most of my family were here last Christmas.  I now have 4 great-grandchildren and according to their grandparents, they are just the best ever.  In June, we added another granddaughter by marriage.

I experienced the hot and humid Arkansas summers this year with Karen’s family.  It was worth it sitting and watching the rivers flow.  I survived a 5 hour canoe ride down a river.  Yep, I started out singing “row, row, row your boat” and ended with “bury me in this river, I can go no further”.  The real show was getting me out of that canoe.  Three times.  I caught the biggest and first fish on a Disney princess rod.  Twelve inches may not be too big to some, but for someone who hasn’t fished in over 60 years, that is exciting.  The beauty of Arkansas was wonderful, but it can’t beat the plains.  It seems one can just breathe deeper when one can see all the way out yonder.

I loved the report on the Stephenville reunion.  It is nice to hear that those folks are still kicking.  I also enjoyed reading Ikard’s letter.  It answered my wonderings about them.  How fun those donkeys must be.

Well, on to another year.  I have the suitcase packed behind the door (not really) ready for the next trip.  I can go because Sharon is faithful to take care of my stuff.  She and Roy are the proud grandparents of No 4, Keyleigh.  This baby I am really getting to enjoy often.  Gale has the first three great-grands and I mostly just get to hear about them.

I can’t close this without saying, “Praise God, He has blessed me more than I could ever imagine or deserve.”  May I never forget to thank Him.

Hi Linda & Crew,

I feel like the Mad Hatter – “I’m late, I’m late………”  So, here is my late check in support for the fine work you all do so well keeping us, the Rusty ones, informed of our collective lives after EPNG.  A great job well done.  Thank you all so very much.

After having traveled thousands of miles, met and talked to thousands of people at hundreds of places throughout the country while doing our gypsy/snake oil thing, Lucy and I have decided we need to do something different beginning next year.  Lucy has two grandsons who have stolen her heart, so, she will take on the “Grandma” thing with great vigor.

The universe is vast – so, for me, there is always something to keep me busy, such as, Roads never traveled, Places never visited, Out of the way places to be discovered, Everlasting wisdom of the world to be learned and passed on to my posterity as well as Lucy’s – one day at a time.

Thank you all again for a job well done.

Dear RPN Staff,

I’m a month late with my donation but time just seems to fly when you are having fun.  My health is not great but what can you expect from an eighty six year old.  If I had expected to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself.  You youngsters are doing a great job with the Rusty Pipeliner.  So, keep up the fine work.

Please know that we sincerely appreciate the fantastic job you folks do.

Rusty Pipeliner Staff,

Enclosed is our check to cover two years donation to the Rusty Pipeliner News. (2010 and 2011).  Sorry to be so late with this, how time does seem to fly when you get older.

We are doing pretty well for old people, Williard will be 80 next month and I will be 75 in October.  Williard just had cataract surgery on his left eye this month and is doing very well with that.  He has been diagnosed with Parkinsons’ disease but since the diagnosis and with medication is doing well at this time.  We were both ill and pretty well confined for a year; but are now up and about again – mostly to doctor’s appointments, church and grocery store.  But, we praise God that we’re once again able to do these simple things.

We enjoy reading the Rusty Pipeliner and do appreciate all your hard work in getting it out.

Rusty Pipeliner News

Enclosed find our check.  I am a little late as it was due in May.

We had a big snow here in East Texas this winter that reminded us of the ones we used to have when we lived at Blanco Plant near Bloomfield.  Thankfully, it was not like the ones we had at Williams Plant near Flagstaff, AZ.  We had to do without power for 3 days.  It was pretty cold for no heat.  The trees here just don’t hold up to heavy snow.  They lose lots of limbs and that sure plays havoc with the electric lines.  Hate to say it, but we have no available natural gas in our area.  Then we had a gorgeous spring with lots of rainfall.  Everything bloomed beautifully as usual, just a little late.  May, however, was a month of no rain at all.  Everything was dying except the trees, BUT we got 7 inches at our little farmstead on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.  Everything is green again already.  The pastures are looking 100 percent better.

Since we are raising spotted grey and white, regular size donkeys, I sure like that pasture to do well.  We are expecting a couple of baby donkeys anytime now and that will make 8 –7 jennies and 1 big white and grey jack.  They are a lot of fun and we sell them to the ranchers around here to keep the coyotes away.  Momma donkeys do not like anything that resembles a canine.  They chase them and stomp them when they catch them.

We are in reasonably good health, Thank the Lord, and hope to stay that way for a while.  I am always happy to see the Rusty Pipeliner so I can see how many people I know and where they are living now.  Our email is lyikard@embarqmail.com if any of you are interested in getting in touch.  Yvonne is also on facebook.

Bye,

Milton G (Gerry) and Yvonne Ikard

Hi Sue,

We lived at station #2 for nine years. Now, for those of you that never lived at a company camp, let me clue you in:

#2 was 65 miles from El Paso, which was where we had to go to do anything. This was mainly shopping for necessities, which took all of our paycheck. Our rent was $25.00 a month, which was deducted from our paycheck. This included all utilities. 65 miles was a long way to drive, especially if you were hauling as many kids as we had! Trips with them were few and far between. A friend of ours drove out there one day and said that you could see for 3 days. My parents, my brother and his wife came in from New Jersey in 1957, when we had been living there for a few months. I picked them up from the airport and started our long trek to camp. After a while I said that we were almost there and my brother said "you said that an hour ago" We went to church at Dell City. That was 40 miles away. The kids went to school at Sierra Blanca. That was 45 miles away, actually in another time zone. We lived in the mountain zone and the school was in the central time zone. As I said, we lived out there for nine years and really enjoyed it. It wasn't easy, but it was worth it. When you take time to think about, we were really FAR OUT!
That's it for this time. Stay tuned.
Ex life prez.

Sue & Helpers:

Thanks for all your time in keeping us connected.  Sorry I’m late – enclosed is our donation.  We are still keeping busy.  J. F. is redoing a house to sell and raising cattle in the summer and has a small garden.  Our daughter, Lecrecia, just got back from her M. D. Anderson checkup – it will be five years this year treatments.  She recently fell and broke two vertebrae in her back but she is doing well.  We are so thankful to still have her.  Stacy had a grinder, buffer accident – sixty stitches in his hand and it is healing.  We went to Amarillo for Delinda’s youngest girl’s high school graduation.  All our grandkids are out of high school.  Her son just got his LVN in Amarillo and the oldest girl (golfer) just had her knee surgery.  Stacy has another grandkid.  We now have eight great-grandkids.  Life is blessed with good health and being able to work.  Best of heath to everyone this year.

Linda & the rest of the Rusty Pipeliner bunch,

Just noticed that my dues were due, so here they are.

Reading the recent obituary on Bobby Joe Choates brought back memories while growing up in Jal, NM during the early fifties.  At that time, none of us had ever seen a TV and very few had phones.  We had to hunt for entertainment.

I spent a good part of my time at the Jal Gassers Ball Park watching the Semi-Pro ballgames.  At that time, El Paso was the main employer there.  They seemed to favor hiring baseball players and several played for the gassers.

There was also a softball league and all the plants, offices, field district and departments had ball teams.  At one time, Jal and the area had as many as 32 teams.  I spent a great deal of my time watching ballgames which brings me to Bobby Joe.  There was so much competition that the head honchoes would go out and hire ball players (especially pitchers) to play for their teams.  Bobby Joe was one of these pitchers.  He was extremely talented and had tremendous control.

This was a very good time to grow up and we had a tremendously good time.  Thought some might enjoy.

Jerry Swaim

Mr. President, Charlie Doolittle:

Charlie – I retired with El Paso Exploration Co. in the late 1980’s after a 30 year career.  Starting in Farmington, NM in 1958 to El Paso, back to Farmington, then to Jal, NM, I ended up in Shamrock, TX as District Engineer.  Forgot the eight years in Amarillo as Regional Production in Engineering Manager.  Anyway, I was in on your training of the Algerians.  Two different classes back in the late 70’s.  They were hard to stay with on a hot summer day – not using deodorant – they smelled to high heaven.  The last week the ones that were there all married French girls.  They did not shave under arms or shave their legs.  You talk about hairy  - UNBELIEVABLE!  Here’s some money for dues.

Thanks,

Gandy

Many thanks for a job well done and much enjoyed.

Dear Linda,

I just received the April 2010 issue of the Rusty Pipeliners News.  Thank you.  It seems like it has been quite a while since I received one – I believe I missed the issue with my husband’s obituary.  I mailed it soon after his death – and would like for you to send me a copy of the issue that included his obituary.  If it has been delayed for some reason, let me know or publish it in the May, 2010 issue.  Thanks,

P. S. Thanks for changing the address label to my name.

[Note from Linda:

Dear Jessie, by now you should have the March issue with your husband, Danny’s obituary included.  Thank you for writing.]

Dear Linda,

I don’t have an “old days story” but I can share a “here and now” story.  Clent retired from Measurement Department in 1986.  We moved to a little farm north of Clyde, TX.   Understand, I did not grow up on a farm and sometimes farm life gets a little much for me………. I got such a fright Saturday evening.  We’d been out late, I took my shower and let the dog out for her late night potty time.  Came back to let her in – low and behold there was a snake wrapped around the storm door handle!  I screamed, running to the other bathroom where Clent was about to get in the tub.  He came running into the living room in his “birthday suit” and slammed the front door.  I was beside myself!  He sat down to put on his shoes!  I asked what he was going to do and he told me he was going around the house with the wasp spray, the hose and a flash light.  I asked “Like That? (shoes – no clothes)!”  He said, “Why not, the snake won’t notice.”  But, I got a robe and had him put it on.  He didn’t find the snake, but let the dog back in the house.  We had a big laugh, but I was still shaking… I told him it was Biblical – women aren’t supposed to like snakes.  Really, he doesn’t like them either.  But, he’s still teasing me about getting so upset over a snake.  That was enough excitement for me for one evening.  I look really close every time I open that door to let the dog out.  And, I probably will for a long time.  Happy Retirement to one and all.

Clent & Imogene Kniffen

Greetings:

My compliments to all the staff who donate their time and effort to publish the Rusty Pipeliners’ News.  Thanks for the updates and information.  Enclosed is a little nonsense about the old days Wash Place, if you have the space and deem it appropriate – use it at your discretion. [This is a great story -- click here to read it.]  Also, I have several boxes of Pipeliners from 1950 to end.  If you would like, I will find a way to get them to you.

Dear Linda,

Where does time go?? It sure enough flew by us this last six months.  Tommie had eye surgery in August last year, his fourth hernia repair on October 1, 2009 at the VA in Albuquerque, then we were off to AZ for five months escaping the cold winter in the four corners of NM.  His surgery went well and AZ was a good place for him to recuperate.  There was one little hiccup, he couldn’t drive or lift anything for some time, so therefore, I had the job of hooking up the car to the motor home with his expertise in directing and drive to Deming, Columbus and then Benson.  I was skeptical at first because it was raining when we left Albuquerque, but I had no problem.  Wow, any woman who goes RVing with her husband needs to learn how to drive those things and do what one must do.  A friend of ours many years ago, Pat Hewett, informed me of this because she had to drive S. L. to the hospital in Cortez, CO from the river out of Rico, CO.  I was so proud of her when I was confronted with the same thing.  One never knows.

We had a good winter, spent two months in Tucson, went to the Retirees Luncheons there, had a good time visiting with the retired people there and the ranks are diminishing.  We really missed those whom we did not see there.  Good times, good friends and the weather was good in spite of all the rain we got while we were there.

Tommie got to do some hiking with a group in the SKP Park in Benson and he enjoyed that very much.  There are many activities in the park where we spent eight winters and we enjoyed our friends there.  We miss our friends there but now we really enjoy our place in NM.  We can see mountains in four states from our back porch and we’re looking forward to some weather now so we can enjoy the scenery.  The mountains are beautiful in their white coats and will sport them for quite some time yet.  It’s still cold here and windy.

All of you have a wonderful summer and keep on keeping on, we enjoy the news and thank all of you for the continuing efforts to keep us together.  Until next time, enjoy life, trust in God and be healthy.  Remember, eat your dessert first, life is short.  Please find enclosed a check to help defray costs.  Thanks,

Mary & Tommie Webb

Hello to all you old rusty pipeliners.  We hope 2010 is bringing good health and much prosperity to each and everyone.  We are still “kicking”, but not very high.  Both of us are having health issues but so far we’ve managed to live with them.  Growing old just “ain’t what we were led to believe” but by the grace of God, we will hang in.  Thanks to the Rusty workers who keep the paper coming.  You’re doing a super job.  Here’s our little contribution for another year.

Bill and Carolyn Bowers

I’m pretty sure I am pretty much late on sending this check.  Could say I was out of checks, could say I was out of stamps but that would be an untruth.  I note on my calendar from each year and this year, it was missed.  Could say my mind slipped another notch.  Thanks anyway for continuing our news as we sure like reading the articles.  Thanks so much.

Well, you would think after 26 years of retirement that I would have a lot of things that I could share with the many friends that I made over the 34 ½ years I had with El Paso.  But, I will give the readers a break and won’t tell it all.  Jean and I still live in Mangum, OK.  We have both had some sickness but both doing very well at this time.  I do want to give a big thanks to all the people who have worked so hard to keep us posted on what’s going on with our people (The El Paso Family who are the Greatest).  Thanks again.

Sorry we are late again.  Time passes too quick.  We have really had a wet winter – lots of snow and rain.  Wish some of it could be carried over to August and July.  We are both doing great, that is for two “old folks”.  We’ve had a good life – so, can’t complain.

Dear Linda,

Well here it is time to pay up again.  Seems like it rolls around faster all the time.  We are both in fair health for the shape we’re in.  My sister who turned 102 years old on February 22, 2010 had a bout with shingles this last winter – how miserable she must have been.  There are only three of us still living to date, out of nine.  My brother Gene, who lives here in Jal also, is on oxygen full time now, and therefore is limited in his mobility.  Ruthie and I are involved with our church.  Ruthie has taken on the task of sending “Care” packages to military personnel who are related to people in Jal, at the expense of the Ladies Sunday School Class of the First Baptist Church in Jal.  And, I sing with the church choir, and our Music Leader is the leader of the Jal Community Choir who are called on for several memorial services for Jal residents.  Our church sponsors a “Ladies Night Out” evening meal once a month and several of we Bachelors-for-the-Night go to Eunice and eat out that night.

Our old ’78 Chevy 4x4 hunting truck cratered on us a month ago.  The 4-speed transmission stripped the teeth off the transmission output shaft when I entered a mud hole on the way to our cabin at Timberon and had to be replaced.  And, the truck only has 233,500 miles on it!  Some might say I’m crazy for putting so much money into an old vehicle, but have you priced a new one lately?

We made a trip to Baton Rouge, LA in February to take in the Mardi Gras Parades, etc., and to visit our oldest granddaughter and her family who live there and teach at LSU.  We took our youngest granddaughter with us and visited two other granddaughters and their families along the way.  Our granddaughters live in Midland, Abilene, Hidaway and Baton Rouge.  We now have (7) Great-Grandsons – no Great Granddaughters, but one (which we haven’t learned which it is yet), on the way.

Jack and Ruthie Shreffler

Dear Rusty Pipeliner Staff,

We thoroughly enjoy the pipeliner and look forward to receiving it each month.  Thanks to all who make it possible.  Enclose is our check to help with expenses.  Sincerely,

Roy & Thelma Tabb

Dear Linda & Everyone who puts out the Rusty Pipeliner,

Let this slip up on me this year as Dalton has spent so much time in the hospital lately with bacterial pneumonia.  Seventeen days in February and March – home for 2 weeks, then back again.  Hopefully, they can lick it this time.  Thanks for the reminder on the label.

Howdy to all Y’All:

Enclosed is our check to help defray the expenses of mailing the Rusty Pipeliner to those not in the 21st Century.  We do not receive the Rusty Pipeliner by “snail-mail,” but for those that do and are not able to pay, maybe this will help out.  The current delivery methods by E-mail work really well.  We certainly appreciate all of the work “all you all” put into the Rusty Pipeliner.  Thanks again,  Willie Quinn

Dear Rusty People,

Running late again (what else is new?) but thanks to the reminder on the address label, at least we know we’re late.  We are going slightly downhill, like everyone else – Walt’s memory and Katy’s ankle, but we are plugging along.  Enjoying Ruidoso and hoping for a very snowy winter.  The last two have been way too dry for the ski area.

Keep up the good work.  It is MUCH appreciated.

Years ago an article was in the Pipeliner regarding death benefits.  We saved it so Leeta would have it if & when needed.  It would be nice to know if the info is still correct.  I think it would be a good article for the Pipeliner.

Dear RPN Editor & Circ. Manager

I am late with this donation due to lack of income for such things.  I tried to get a job putting strips of reflector metal on barbed wire fence to keep the prairie chickens from killing themselves on the wire.  Couldn’t get work because I was over trained.  I told them I could cut reflector tape with scissors.

The Laverne Country Club, where they allow me to play golf, has a nice little deal where if you make a hole in one, each member gives you money at $1.00 each.  I collected enough to spend for 2 years.  I actually made a hole in one at 82 years, 9 months, and 1 day on the 13th hole – 141 yards with a # 4 Hybrid.

Just reading November message from Jesse III and now I know.  We were playing Pinochle at old # 1, Southern Division, the men at Blair’s house (he had diapers to change) – the women at Wayne & Leona Oakley’s house.  At 4:00 a.m., Marge came in and said Leona needed to go to the hospital (NOW!).  Jesse was quick to answer that “Wayne can’t leave, he is winning.”  Now I know from Jesse’s explanation of their first child why the Oakley’s only had 3 children.

Now to change thoughts – sadness is real for all of us still here when we read the good byes.  Well, enough talk.  Am sending a check.  I am counting on three days to get there.  Thank you for the RPN.

Hello to all and thanks for your work in keeping us up-to-date on the EPNG retirees.  Still living in Hereford, AZ and staying busy with 13 miniature horses, 2 full size horses, 4 dogs and a barn cat!  People stop at our fence on a regular basis to watch our “mini herd”.

Happy holidays and a wonderful New Year 2010 to all.

Jim and Janice Wise

Thank you for all you do.  We enjoy the pipeliner so much.  As usual, the check is late.  El Paso Natural Gas has been a blessing to us.  Our favorite places were Gresham and Guadalupe Stations.  Terrell Plant was also a great place to live.  We both liked to live in the country and that was a good thing.  We have one grandchild.  She is nurse and her husband is a career soldier back from Iraq and expecting to go again.  They have our one great grandchild.  She’s sixteen months old.  Retirement is great!

Ernest & Joy Adair

It’s time to pay up again.  Margaret and I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and wish everyone a happy New Year.

We still enjoy traveling in our 5th wheel trailer.  Last spring, we spent several days in Chantilly, VA where our son and his crew were building a church.  We got to spend time visiting the sites in Washington, D.C. and on the way back through Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and Smokey Mts.  Then in Oct., we volunteered at the Cowboy Symposium in Ruidoso, NM.  That is always a fun filled weekend with lots of good entertainment and also seeing a lot of old friends.

Thanks for the “Rusty Pipeliner”.

Thank you for all your hard work.  Always enjoy the “news”!

Thanks again.

Dear Sue and Linda – RPN Crew,

Thanks for your commitment in keeping the Pipeliner going.  Donation attached.

Bonnie spent the last five years home schooling our grandson.  He wasn’t doing well in school at the 8th grade level.  Ultimately, after graduation, he scored the 6th highest on the San Juan College entrance exam and has made straight “A’s” in his first year of his Technical/Mechanical courses.  Never give up on our youngsters – there is always a way to help them be successful.

Carroll was re-elected to his third term as a director of the Bloomfield Irrigation District this month.  His primary goal is ensuring the water adjudication suit for settlements of Navajo and Federal water rights is fair to all parties and current water users are not harmed in the San Juan Basin.  He also gets to interact with actual EPNG and Enterprise employees as an added benefit to his responsibilities of managing the district as chairman and manager.  Best regards.

Thanks so much for catching us up on RPL’s.  You do a great job with the various “News”.  We are doing very well as long as we keep track of doctors, dentists, hearing helpers, eye experts and the occasional chiropractor!  Staying busy is a big factor too.  Sorta like a really old car that costs too much to repair, but we want to keep it running, so we stay with it.  Our regards to all we can keep up with, and remember our times together.

Another year has come and gone and it is time to send in a donation.  We have both been blessed with good health for another year.  We did have another addition to our family.  In August, our granddaughter presented us with another little great-grandson.  That was a happy time for our family.  Benny is still enjoying his retirement and I still enjoy my little part-time job.  Thanks so much for all the hard work that you do in helping us to keep up with old friends.  We do appreciate knowing what is happening to everyone.  Sincerely,

Benny and Donna Hendricks

Dear Rusty Pipeliner Crew and all within eyesight of its pages!

Our wish for each of you is a very Happy New Year – one that brings you lots of love, friendships new and old, peace of mind knowing who is in control no matter what kind of mess is made in Washington and healthy bodies even as they tend to grow old along with our age.  Be happy and God bless you all.

Hi,

Sorry I am late for my dues, but the time just got away from me.  I enjoy the newsletter although I don’t know many people in it anymore.  I still want to get the news.  I am doing pretty good for an old lady.  I am 85 and doing well right now.  Keep up the good newsletter.  Thanks a lot.

Dear Sue & Linda:

It’s the middle of winter in Houston – cold and rainy!  Pat and I miss the El Paso sunshine.  We’re doing just fine.  Sure hope Jesse is better.

When my wife and I were in Lubbock, TX on January 21st, I carried my ring to a jewelry shop.  The repairman looked at my El Paso Natural Gas ring and told me it could not be repaired.  After we returned home, I called Linda Carter.  I told her that sometime ago I had seen something about jewelry repair service in the Rusty Pipeliner.  Linda said she knew who to call and would call me back.  Linda called me with the information.  I called O. C. Tanner Co., in Salt Lake City, UT.  They told me to ship the ring by UPS.  After shipping my ring – two weeks and two days later, I received a new ring.  Many thanks to you, Linda.  I’m very proud of my new ring.  We are sending our dues now that are due in May, 2010.  Thank you so much, Linda

Hello to All –

Time, once again, to send in our donation to Rusty Pipeliners’ News.

Linda,

Thanks for special people like you.

Dear Sue,

We hope this letter finds you and all the

pipeliners well (as can be expected).

I hope Jesse is doing much better as we worked together at Station #2 & Salt Flat in the late 50s and early 60s. My work for El Paso was a happy time as I worked at every Division – Main Office, Southern Division, Permian Division, and finally San Juan Division.

Hi Everyone!

I still know some of these people! Nice article about Julian (Jude) Baker. Thanks Sue and Linda! Nice job!

Rusty Pipeliner Staff,

Sorry we are behind. Looks like we should pay early next time.

Don’t know what could be wrong but, the September and October News only had the front and back pages – nothing in between. Hope no one else had this problem. Keep up the good work. We do appreciate you ALL.

Dear Sue and Linda and all the staff,

Thank you all for your dedication to bring us our link with our friends from the past. Thanks goodness for the reminder date on our address.

I was always such a big fan of the “Blue Flame.” It was such a dependable beacon for the whole city in the night sky. I found this card among some old papers that should have been sorted out years ago. We had them at the “Building Company” for public information (Back in 1977.) Well, anyway, I thought maybe the readers would be interested. [Please see below.]

Also enclosed is our check.

Hello to all.

Thanks so much for your work on the Pipeliner. We enjoy it so much. Enclosed is a check. Ralph is still inspecting.

Dear RPN crew,

I see it’s almost time to pay my dues for another year, but first I want to thank you all for your hard work. It’s so nice to know how our old friends and neighbors are doing. I’ve been keeping Jesse Blair in my prayers, hope he is doing better and healing nicely.

God bless, take care.

Linda Carter:

Please forgive me for not staying current with my checks to the Rusty Pipeliner. Selling our Lake House, moving into a Retirement Home, keeping up with family doctor appointments and enjoying the activities here at our new home have kept me a little busy.

Justine and I are enjoying the many new friends we have made here but still often think of those we left in El Paso. So sorry that we lost Bill Healy, best friend a person could ever have. Please hug Boots and tell her how fortunate she was to have been loved by two of the best.

Enclosed is a check that should (?) bring me up to date, if not just let me know.

Best regards to all.

Hello Friends at the Pipeliner,

Thank you for keeping us up to date on people far away. With Jack’s passing on September 9, 2009, I know that news will reach others also. He had so many memories of all the places he worked and people in camps and in El Paso.

Please keep the Pipeliner coming – check enclosed.

Best Regards,

Dear Joe & Linda,

I am receiving my uncle’s mail and got your note.  I thought you’d like an update and new address for H. O. Whitt.  He went into Midland Hospital with great pain in his sciatic nerve.  The pain killers caused him to have nausea and loss of appetite.  It was a downward spiral.  He decided to choose a nursing home over a rehab facility, so we found the Texas State Veterans Home in Big Spring, a clean, new, affordable facility.  The address there is:

          Hubert O. Whitt

          % Lamun Lusk Sanchez TSVH

          1809 N. US HWY 87 – Room 206 A

          Big Spring, TX 79720-0793

If you want to call him, call the hospital first and ask for Wing A and ask someone to make sure he has his phone.  They have been thoughtful in helping me.

          Hospital Phone # 432-268-8387

          H. O’s # is 432-517-4909

He is regaining his appetite and strength.  Hubert lives for his friends and I know he’d love to hear from you.  Thank you for writing him and being his friend.

We are renewing our Rusty Pipeliner for another year. Thank you for all the hard work.

C.J. “Jim” & Brigitte Brisbin

Dear RPN Staff:

Here it is again time for my Dad, Stan Hagar’s renewal on his newsletter. Where does the year go. Well, it has been quite a hectic year to say the least. My Mom passed awaty as you know on November 14, 2008. Then on July 16, my Dad went down. I stayed a little more than 2 weeks at his home with him day and night. I was able to get hospice involved with help for him and myself. In order to have some kind of order in our lives, I arranged for a medical transport for Dad to be moved to my house. So Dad has a room in my house with Rich and myself and my little animals. He has been herr since July 30th. He is still confuse about things but he is doing some better. He still cannot walk or help himself to do things. I have a Hover lift in order to lift him in and out of bed. That is a God Send to say the least. Hospice CNAs come in on Monday, Wednesday and Friday to do baths and to change his bedding. What a wonderful organization they are.

September 14, Kennon Wilson came by for supper, son of Gene and Nancy. We grew up at the Willcox Station until they moved after his 8th-grade year. We had not seen him in 45 years. Linda McWilliams Neely (daughter of Joe & Lois) and husband came by to visit also. What a wonderful visit we all had. I was able to take a few pictures. Funny how Kennon and myself have gray hair amd Linda Lo doesn’t, Ha Ha. Just teasing Linda. Kennon lives in Virginia.

If anyone would like to write to my Dad, send it to my address and please change the mailing address for his newsletter to mine. Plus I also have an email address if that would work better.

Dear Sue & Linda,

Enclosed is a check for a couple of years so we will be ahead for a change. We are so grateful for all you two do in publishing the “Pipeliner”. We enjoy being able to read of the goings and comings of our fellow retirees.

Linda & Sue,

The reason I’ve put off so late in August to mail my donation is because I have been trying to think of something cute to say and it hasn’t come yet so I’ll just say thanks for keeping us posted on the whereabouts of all the rusty pipeliners. Jean and I are still living in Georgetown, Texas and doing good. She has graduated from her electric chair to a three wheel mobilator and is doing great. I overcame a severe heart attack ten years ago this August 31 and am doing great. After the attack I started walking one and half miles and lift weights daily and highly recommend it to anybody interested. The doctor said I had a 40% permanent heart function loss and after two years he did tests and said I had regained nearly 100%.

God Bless You All,

Sue,

The attached article is about Jeff Glaves, who worked for EPNG for 25 years.  I thought you would find it interesting.  If you have any questions about Mr. Glaves,  just ask Jesse.  He and Mr. Glaves bowled together and were in the Toastmasters at the same time. article about Jeff Glaves, an EPNG retiree - it's a wonderful article and

I'd like to include it in the August issue of the Rusty Pipeliner, if that's

okay with you - please let me know if that would present a problem for you -

I'd would include all the information about where the article came from -

Mr. Glaves in your newsletter, I'm sure his family would be very

appreciative. Please contact me with any questions and/or concerns.

Thank you and have a good day,

Cpl. Nola

Hello, my name is Kathy Frost and I am Jeff's youngest daughter.  I was forwarded an email that you sent to Cpl Nola concerning my Dad and I feel that it would be great to do an article on Dad in the Rusty Pipeline.  I didn't even know this existed.  I will gladly forward you some pictures if you would like.  My Dad has accomplished a lot in his life and this would be an honor to him to have this done.  Currently his is in very good health, still drives, lives by himself in Las Vegas, and still has his sharp mind and sense of humor about him.  If you have any questions, you can contact me at the information listed below.  Also a bit of information, I started with El Paso Natural Gas Company in 1974 working for Anne Wise.  Anyway, this would be another honor to my Dad and also would be a great surprise to him as well.  Thank you so much.

Suzy,

We are doing better now that we are able to stay home for most of the treatments. They are doing the infusions here in Abilene, but will continue to do the scans in Houston. At present time we are making about one trip a month to Houston. This has worked so much better for the entire family. Kathy's school starts in a couple of weeks and she is already having to go to the school 2 or 3 times a week. She takes off and makes the trip with us which usually can be done in 2 to 3 days, depending on the treatments. I have a wonderful family for which I am very thankful. My daughter in N.C. came and stayed for 2 months, just went home last week. She had a new granddaughter while she was here. I am so thankful for my El Paso family too, for all the telephone calls, cards and especially the prayers.

Charley and Betty Annett

Well, here we are later than usual. Sorry about that. When I get to be 90, I will probably be 6 months to a year late.

But thank you anyway, until next time.

Dear Linda,

Sorry I am a little late, but I have been a little down. I have been very sick since the first of the year.

They finally said they had to take out my gall bladder. They did it. I am now feeling super.

Someone left the HOT GATE opened here in Henderson, Texas.

I sure hope everyone there is doing great.

Sending a little extra to maybe help in some way. You all are doing a wonderful, super job and I love and pray for you all.

Dear Sue & Linda,

Reading about the color of our El Paso Flame on top of the Paul Kayser Building in El Paso brought back a memory that Don and I had laughed about many times. On April 1st of the year following the completion of the flame, the El Paso Times had a banner headline “El Paso Flame Broken”. We lived on Stanton Street, next to Cathedral School and we could overlook a lot of the city of El Paso. We didn’t take time to read the article as it was such a shock we ran out into the street to look at the broken flame. We felt like morons, as we were, when we saw its blue flame shining brightly. That flame meant so much to El Paso citizens and for many years served as a landmark reminder of our beloved El Paso Natural Gas Company.

I am enclosing my dues and am certain I am still behind. Although I do not know some of the people mentioned therein, I do enjoy the Rusty Pipeliner. Thank you for the good work.

A Senior’s Prayer

Today Dear Lord, I’m 80 and there is so much I haven’t done.

I hope, Dear Lord, you’ll let me live until I’m 81.

But then, if I haven’t finished all I want to do,

Would you let me stay awhile – until I’m 82?

So many places I want to go, so very much to see –

Do you think that You could make it 83?

The world is changing very fast, there is so much in store.

I’d like very much to live until I’m 84.

And if by then I’m still alive I’d like to stay ‘till 85.

More planes will be up in the air, so I’d really like to stick –

And see what happens to the world when I’m 86.

I know, Dear Lord, it’s much to ask

(and it must be nice in heaven)

But I really would like to stay until I’m 87.

I know by then I won’t be fast and sometimes will be late,

But it would be so pleasant to be around at 88.

I will have seen so many things, and had a wonderful time.

So, I’m sure that I’ll be willing to leave at 89 . . . maybe?

Got it made at 80

We oldsters sure do get away with a lot just because we’ve managed to keep breathing longer than most folks. I’ve just celebrated my 80th birthday and I’ve got it made.

If you forget someone’s name or an appointment or what you said yesterday, just explain that you are 80, and you will be forgiven. If you spill soup on your tie, or forget to shave half your face, or take another man’s hat by mistake, or promise to mail a letter and carry it around in your pocket for two weeks, just say “I’m 80 you know,” and nobody will say a thing.

You have a perfect alibi for everything when you’re 80. If you act silly, you’re in your “second childhood.”

Being 80 is much better than being 70. At 70 people are mad at you for everything, but if you make it to 80, you can talk back, argue, disagree and insist on having your own way because everybody thinks you are getting a little soft in the head.

They say life begins at 40. Not true. If you ask me, life begins at 80!

Linda –

Thanks for keeping us informed about the Good Ole Days at EPNG. I really enjoy reading the RPN every month. By brother, Bill Melver (Akron, Ohio) was visiting my mother for Mother’s Day and of course he wants Mexican food three times a day. We were at Forti restaurant when I heard a voice say Jimmy Melver. I turned around and sitting next to us was Sandy and Jack Graves. They had come to El Paso for Mother’s Day from Buchanan Dam, TX. It was great seeing them and they might come back for the Reunion in October. I am President of El Paso TX Flags Across America and we keep flying our 50 x 100 foot American Flag for the freedom we enjoy every day. Here are my annual dues for couple years and small donation. Thanks!

Dear Pipeliners,

Enclosed is our check for another year. Please keep the Pipeliners coming.

As with everyone else, we are growing old. We have both had our share of problems in the medical field but have kicked back nicely. As much as we liked to travel, we have given up on it. We are sorry that Jack and I will not be able to attend the fall reunion.

My son Mike Becker and daughter Shannon have retired and son Tim is working in California, loves it. They visit regularly. Our granddaughter lives here in San Angelo with her two children. They visit regularly, so we are not alone.

Love to all,

Thanks so much to each of you for the dedication you show each month to help us keep in touch with all of the retirees.

We raised two “Camp Brats” in Jal General Camp. It was a great place for kids to grow up. Everybody looked out for all the kids and you always knew they were safe.

The forty years Bob worked for EPNG were great years and Jal was a good place to live.

Enclosed is a check for “The Rusty Pipeliner.” We believe it’s the best bargain we’ve found.

To: EPNG – Rusty Pipeliners’ News

Here is our money to keep the news coming. Thanks for keeping us up-to-date on EPNG. We enjoy notes from the camps, but wish more people from the main office would write.

Ron worked in Accounting and Gas Settlement for about 30+ years. I was in Engineering and Human Resources for 10 years. We are happy in south Texas (Pleasanton is 45 miles south of San Antonio). Our two daughters and all their families are here.

We’ve had various physical problems like everyone else, but we’re here. I am in a wheelchair but get out and about, Ron uses a walker. We’ve had heart problems, hip and knee replacements, etc.

Our eight great-grandchildren are great entertainment. We go out to lunch every day – enjoy visiting with people and stay busy at our church.

Love to all,

Thanks for all the hard work you are doing with the Pipeliner News. We enjoy keeping up with our friends. We are trying to sell our house. If we can sell the house, we are planning to relocate to San Angelo, TX. We will send an address change when we move. Thanks again for all your hard work.

To Retirees Staff:

Thanks for the great job everyone does. I really enjoy Jesse Blair’s messages. Although I never met him, Ethel and I lived in Company camps with 4 children, so can relate to camp life. I must say it was a great Company and many wonderful people. Ethel and I will celebrate our 61st anniversary on July 4, 2009.

Linda and Sue,

As usual running late again, sorry only hope it doesn’t put added work on you. Sure do appreciate the RPN – such a pleasure to read and see what all are doing and who are still with us. All is doing fairly well here. Hope the both of you have a great rest of the year.

Thanks for all you do. We enjoy reading the news.

Thank you for your continued support for our EPNG Retiree’s Roundup here in Farmington. I’m sending you a flyer for our 2009 Roundup. Please, if at all possible, place it in your July issue of the Rusty Pipeliner. [Please see Reunions.] Also my check for next year is enclosed. Keep up the fine work all of you are doing – it is really appreciated.
