Retirees' News Solving ASARCO

Solve Asarco
The Times of May 28, concerning Asarco, has moved this old Texas Mines graduate
to offer a couple of comments:
The city has been at this for far too many years. It’s time to do something
different, not spend money and more time foolishly.
The city should declare eminent domain and take over the area.
The city should contact “Lefty” Natalicio at her diggings and make a deal. She
could put some of her brightest minds to work. Usually, they’re hired based on
academic and scientific achievements, not nepotism; they are used to working,
thus earning their salaries.
Since some of the land is adjacent to, or very near, the present campus, maybe
land and not cash can be exchanged.
Some bright professor might even find a way to make all that slag profitable.
The land along the river might serve as a place for campus growth. The Juárez
students might possibly get a foot-crossing bridge, thus helping to solve
commuting problems for them.
Here’s hoping these comments will activate somebody in our government to get to
earning their salary and get Asarco solved.

It looks like Bud Lassiter (EPT 6/16) got it all wrong regarding the disposition
of ASARCO.
Why anyone would want the City to acquire this property via eminent domain is
beyond my comprehension. The City should have as little to do with ASARCO as
possible. We simply do not need yet another tax-consuming project initiated by
the city.
A foot-bridge for Juarez students? What will they think of next!
Also, the land along the Rio Grande is natural farm land. It should revert back
to that purpose. Build up on the Mt. Franklin slopes. That's mostly rock.
ASARCO property should be sold to private enterprise entrepreneurs. An absolute
minimum of tax money should be encouraged. In case you have forgotten,
government treasuries are exhausted.
Stick to basketball Bud!
